The Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) program is funded by the Irving K. Barber Endowment. The program encourages undergraduate students enrolled to pursue innovative and original research as part of their learning experience.

This award recognizes individuals in the Faculty of Science who have demonstrated excellence in supporting and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) from an intersectional social justice lens.

GENERAL Awards

There are a variety of awards and prizes governed by UBC Okanagan’s Senate for which students of the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science are eligible.

Pushor Mitchell LLP Gold Medal Leadership Prize

A $10,000 prize is offered by Pushor Mitchell LLP to a graduating student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science or Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at The University of British Columbia Okanagan. In addition to academic achievement in the student’s final 48 credits, candidates for the award must demonstrate leadership in one or more of the following areas: community service or volunteerism, cross-cultural relations, promotion of diversity, intellectual pursuits, and artistic or athletic endeavours. The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty.

River Timothy Sidley Memorial Award

An $8,200 award is offered by the family and friends of River Timothy Sidley to a second-, third-, or fourth-year student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus. The award will be given to a student attending the Bamfield Marine Science Centre Fall Program who has demonstrated academic excellence. Once applications close for the Bamfield Marine Science Centre Fall Program, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science will review the admitted UBCO applicants and recommend applicants to receive the award.

There is no application form for the River Timothy Sidley Memorial Award. The recipient of this award will be selected from the list of student who have applied to the Fall session at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre by March 31st. The selected recipient will be notified by mid-April. Note: this is a conditional offer; details will be outlined to the potential recipient via email.

The recipient of the River Timothy Sidley Memorial Award must register and attend the Bamfield Marine Science Centre Fall in the subsequent winter session.

Eligibility: to be considered for the River Timothy Sidley Memorial Award, you are or will be a second-, third- or fourth-year BSc student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, and you must meet the minimum Senate Regulations Governing University Awards.

One or two $8,200 awards are available annually.

Henderson Award in International Development

A $3,900 award is offered by the Henderson family through the Shuswap Community Foundation to an undergraduate or graduate student at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus, who is participating in an international health and/or international community development initiative taking place in a developing country, with preference given to an international student. The award is made by Faculty, School or College nomination to Enrolment Services.

HSBC Bank Canada Prize

A $1,200 prize is offered by HSBC Bank Canada in memory of the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire. The prizes are awarded to a student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, or the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or the Faculty of Health and Social Development, or the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who has conducted a research project or special initiative that examines the sociological, economical, ecological, environmental, psychological, or health impacts of environmental disturbances (terrestrial, aquatic, marine; natural or human-caused). The prize will be conferred upon a student from each of the following Schools and Faculties, in successive years, and in this order: the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Health and Social Development, and then the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.

New Monaco Enterprise Award in Sustainable Development

A $1,000 award is offered by New Monaco Enterprise GP Corporation to a student entering third or fourth year in the School of Engineering, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who has demonstrated achievement in the area of sustainable development, including urban planning, engineering, and design; energy or water efficiency; and/or renewable energy. Preference is given to a student whose efforts are focused on the Okanagan community. The award will be conferred upon a student from each of the following Schools and Faculty, in successive years, and in this order: the School of Engineering, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and then the Faculty of Critical and Creative Studies.
